Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle management.
