The right-arm seamer experienced discomfort in his left leg after the final ball in his spell during the morning session. The England team stated Atkinson reported "discomfort" and required time away from the action for further assessment "over the next few hours". The final Test in this Ashes battle at the SCG gets underway on Sunday, 4 January. The visitors have previously lost strike bowlers Mark Wood with a knee problem and another paceman because of a side injury during this series. A replacement bowler was brought into the squad to provide backup. The seamer had a tough time during the first two matches, taking just three wickets. He was left out from the previous Test, before being recalled for the Melbourne Test as Archer's replacement. Surrey's Atkinson showed better form in Melbourne, claiming a couple of wickets during the host's first knock, then making 28 while batting being one of only three English batsmen who passed ten runs. After bowling one over late on the first day, he returned for the second day's play and dismissed the nightwatchman edging to the keeper. However, at the end of his spell, he sent down a change of pace to the batsman and promptly felt for his hamstring. Gus Atkinson was recalled for the fourth Ashes Test after being left out of the third.
