People have assembled across the country to remember two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The attack led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for Jews since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by launching a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the UN and other international bodies.

"The aggressive adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," Benjamin Netanyahu added on that day.

He also promised to "realize all the goals of the war: the release of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will not pose a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel

The national leadership delayed official memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still were held around the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israelis killed in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was respected across the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

At the same time, both sides' representatives gathered in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of indirect talks to review the provisions of the proposal.

A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an evening round of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official stated the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the first phase of the agreement.

He commented that the talks are "tough and have still not achieve any major advancement," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the disparities between the two sides.

Essential Issues in Negotiations

  • A permanent halt to fighting
  • The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for relief supplies deliveries
  • After-conflict management of the area

Public Feeling

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, young Hagar - whose sibling endured the assault on the outdoor event, where hundreds were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas fighters - shared: "No location appears as home now and until every captive come back no one will feel safe."

"After we see all home again, we can breathe anew. Then we can start to heal," she concluded.

Near the leader's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel states 48 remain in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be alive.

Demonstrator a participant stated: "We need do every compromise needed for the captives to return. But we really want promises that we will be secure."

Research now regularly indicate that about the majority of Israeli citizens want the hostilities to finish in exchange for the liberation of the captives.

Gaza Situation

At the area of Nova festival, grieving people came together to pay their respects.

From the site, the boom of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers said the severe Israeli shelling persisted.

In Gaza City, attacks were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and zone districts and in the east side area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.

"As the night falls, the dread appears with it," relocated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing previously, described.

"My family are afraid of the attacks. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, particularly my little child who puts his head on me all night."

"Continuously we monitor the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this halt will not be finalized and that the conflict will resume to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had accepted the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the southern city of that area indicated two more fatalities had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli troops while attempting to get help to the south, medics said.
