Severe gusts hitting speeds of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused nearly 90,000 households experiencing outages and forced authorities to halt over 100 flights, as reported by local media.

The winds are influencing the whole southern region and southern sections of the northern region, per the weather forecasting body.

Officials in New Zealand have released infrequent high-level wind alerts - the highest alert level - in central regions including Canterbury and Wellington.

People have been encouraged to remain inside, refrain from journeys, and prepare for additional power and communication outages.

Extensive Impact and Emergency Measures

The power cut is primarily influencing households mostly in the southern region, while officials say that energy was being gradually reinstated.

Local media have stated that in some places homes have lost their roofs, and power lines and trees have been toppled by the winds.

In Wellington, a person was lost his life after being struck by a wooden fragment at a frequent walking route on earlier this week.

Additionally in the city, a female was blown onto oncoming traffic on a road by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was filmed in a popular vehicle recording.

Air travel entering and leaving the metropolis have been halted as a result of the weather, and some roads and libraries are also closed.

At the same time local leaders have issued a state of emergency, to facilitate recovery activities.

Strike Action Alongside Severe Conditions

The wild winds on Thursday occur while numerous of school staff, physicians and civil servants are participating in what has been described as a "major walkout", calling for higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

Yet the intense climate has compelled them to change various scheduled activities, with several external protests moved indoors or called off.

Comparable winds are impacting the neighboring country, bringing a high-temperature event to the nation's interior regions.

Officials have issued burning restrictions for concern about bushfires.
