Fresh Beginnings Her appointment follows the departure of Albertin Montoya, who guided the San Jose-based club during its debut two seasons in the top-flight American league. Montoya stated in September his intention to resign at the conclusion of the 2025 campaign, a season which saw Bay FC finish second-bottom in the 14-team standings. âI have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the FA,â remarked Coates. âThe experience has been formative both on and off the pitch. Now, I feel ready and excited to test my abilities in a fresh challenge.â Track Record of Success Since taking charge in 2023, Coates managed the England U23s through fixtures including a 1-0 victory over Norway in the continental competition and a high-scoring loss to the United States. She will be joined to the NWSL is her England assistant, Gemma Davies, a ex- Aston Villa manager in the WSL. The club's chief executive, a one-time Football Association technical lead, praised Coates's abilities: âShe is both an outstanding tactician, but she also has a proven track record of nurturing talent to compete at the highest levels.â âCoates excels at leading of people and culture and has the football vision we were seeking,â added Cossington. Club Context The California side experienced a contrasting start to its NWSL existence, securing a playoff spot and suffering a postseason defeat in its inaugural campaign before facing difficulties to a near-bottom placement in 2025. The new FA womenâs technical director, Gavin Step, offered thanks to the outgoing coaches: âWe thank Emma and Gemma for their time with us and extend our best wishes with their next chapter. They have played a pivotal part in bolstering the progression route between the young Lionesses and the first team.â âTogether, they have directly impacted the development of many promising talents who have progressed into senior Lionesses,â Step concluded. Lasting Legacy Since taking over Mo Marley in 2023, Coates presided over the advancement of several players to the national team, including midfielder Lucia Kendallâwho netted her debut Lionesses goalâand forwards Michelle Agyemang and Aggie Beever-Jones. An extensive process for new U23 coaching staff has begun, to continue the development of the Womenâs Under-23s setup in the coming years.
