An Story of Surprising Kindness: The Time a Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor

Back in 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for a medical school interview. My plan was to book a place to stay upon arrival, however upon reaching the city, a major event was taking place and all the backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were completely sold out.

Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could spend the night at the terminal – but soon learned Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open around the clock. Not knowing what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I caught public transport and found myself drifting near a gaming venue, reasoning I might spend those hours somewhere operating 24/7. This was not ideal in the best shape for nailing a crucial interview the next morning, however, being a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.

The world needs more individuals who show such kindness.

I must have looked out of place as a female student noticed me wandering around downtown and asked whether I needed help. I explained my situation and immediately she suggested I could sleep on a spare mattress in her student dorm at the local university – an ideal turn of events, given that my the important interview was the following day. Generously, she also provided a meal: a leftover stuffed baguettes she had from her part-time job. This gave me the bathroom and somewhere safe and secure to spend the night.

With hindsight, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she undertook being a woman inviting a man who was a complete stranger stay in her room. In those days I existed within my own unawareness and not even thinking to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, it astounds me she took that chance – and remain deeply appreciative.

I never did go to that university, and I didn’t meet the student afterwards, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of human compassion. My sincere desire is that karma has repaid her act of kindness tenfold. Our society requires more people with such compassion.
