The 2026 Formula 1 cars are expected to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious compared to current models.

Formula 1 has unveiled the simplified terminology that will be used to describe the technical complexities of its upcoming 2026 technical rules.

The sport is introducing what is arguably the biggest rules overhaul in its illustrious history starting in 2026, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the compulsory introduction of eco-friendly fuels.

The updated 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrids, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a significantly increased energy storage, requiring significant developments in the vehicles' aerodynamic design.

Over a race distance, drivers will carefully oversee battery power – sometimes even flying laps – to achieve the peak lap time.

Extensive fan consultation were carried out with a mix of viewers, including dedicated enthusiasts and casual observers, to identify which terms would aid comprehension of the main elements of the 2026 changes.

The primary aim was to render a set of intricate new areas of the racing as easy to grasp as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, initial designations for some systems – such as "x-mode and z-mode" for the adjustable aero – have been abandoned in preference for intuitive labels that succinctly convey the real-world effect of the technology.

Key Technical Innovations

The FIA states that racers will have increased agency to determine tactics regarding power usage, energy recovery, and efficiency.

The upcoming changes feature a set of functions that will be clearly indicated on TV overlays to improve the fans' insight of the on-track action.

  • Passing Mode: This takes over from the existing Drag Reduction System. It provides a short boost of battery power accessible when a competitor is close behind the car ahead to facilitate an overtaking maneuver.
  • Boost Mode: This is a on-demand power boost from the hybrid system that can be deployed for offensive or defensive moves. It delivers the driver full engine and battery energy at the push of a button.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be deployed strategically, as the available electrical charge is capped.

  • Active Aerodynamics: Both the front and rear wings move automatically – flattening on the straights for minimal air resistance and top speed, and closing in the corners for optimal cornering performance.
  • Energy Harvesting: Cars can harvest energy with energy harvested under braking, or during partial power application at the straight's end or in certain corners where only partial power is used.

2026 Car Specifications

The next-generation machines will be more compact and lighter compared to the 2025 spec, with a car length shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, car width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the car weight decreased by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is expected to drop by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although teams will naturally regain performance as they optimize their packages.

Air resistance has been reduced by 40%. The vehicles will feature moveable wing elements – both wings will adjust on the straight sections to cut resistance and increase straightline speed and return into place for maximum cornering performance.

Wheels will keep 18-inch rims, but the actual tyres will be slimmer, by 25mm at the front and three centimetres on the rear.

What's Changing in the Engines?

The revised hybrid units will have an approximate 50-50 split in horsepower generated by the internal combustion engine and the electrical system, up from about one-fifth electric power in the current formula.

The hybrid system is simplified through the deletion of the MGU-H, the intricate and expensive device that harvested power from the turbo.

All vehicles will be mandated to operate on 100% sustainable fuel, produced using organic sources or synthetic production methods.
